Paediatric Gross Motor Assessment

  • Support Your Baby’s Development with a Gross Motor Assessment

Every baby develops at their own pace but sometimes, a little extra support can make a big difference. If you're wondering whether your baby is rolling, sitting, crawling, or walking as expected, a Gross Motor Assessment can provide the clarity and guidance you need.

A Gross Motor Assessment is a gentle, play-based session where a qualified physiotherapist evaluates your baby’s ability to move and control their body. This includes:

    • Head and neck control

    • Rolling and sitting

    • Crawling or bottom-shuffling

    • Standing and walking

    • Muscle tone and coordination

Based on Dr Mai-Anh Burke’s (Physiotherapist) time at The Sydney Children’s Hospital, we use standardised tools and child-friendly activities to make sure your baby is comfortable and having fun!

    When should I book?

Your baby's early movement skills are the foundation for everything to come—balance, coordination, strength, and even confidence.

Book a Gross Motor Assessment if:

    • Your baby isn’t meeting expected milestones

    • You’ve been told “just wait” but feel unsure

    • You notice asymmetrical movement or stiffness

    • Your baby has a history of premature birth or birth complications

    • You simply want a check-in for peace of mind

    What you’ll leave with:

After a 60 minutes session, you will have a better understanding of your baby’s current developmental stage. You will be given simple, practical tips and leave feeling empowered to help your baby’s unique growth journey.

Whether everything is right on track or your baby needs a little extra help, we’re here to help.

Paediatric Physio: Torticollis/ Plagiocephaly

  • Have you or your doctor noticed tight or imbalanced neck muscles in your baby (torticollis) or that your baby’s head is flatter or uneven (plagiocephaly)? These are both common conditions in babies and while their long names may sound alarming, both torticollis and plagiocephaly are treatable with early physiotherapy intervention.

Early treatment of torticollis is crucial to prevent complications such as feeding difficulties, sleep disturbances, and the development of plagiocephaly or brachycephaly. Treatment involves educating parents about optimal positioning during sleep, feeding, and playtime to encourage proper head and neck movement. Gentle massage and stretching techniques will be performed during the session and taught to the parents for continued care at home.

    When should I book?

    • Your baby’s head always turns to one side

    • A visible flat spot on one side or the back of the head

    • Difficulty turning their head fully

    • Uneven eye or ear alignment

    • Your baby prefers feeding on one side

If you have noticed any of the above, booking a Paediatric Physiotherapy Assessment may ease your mind and if needed, early physiotherapy intervention can make correcting Torticollis/Wry neck or plagiocephaly much easier.

What to expect in a session:

If Torticollis or Plagiocephaly is identified, gentle, baby friendly techniques will be used to help:

    • Improve your baby’s neck mobility and head control

    • Encourage symmetrical motor development

    • Prevent or reduce flat spots on the head

    • Guide you with daily exercises and positioning strategies during sleep, feeding and playtime at home

    • Set your baby up for better crawling, sitting, and walking skills
